Whether it be three-wheelers, two-wheelers, or four-wheelers, electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming increasingly popular. While the other sectors provide a wide range of options, the market for four-wheeled passenger vehicles requires a link between mass producers like the ultra-luxury and Tata Nexon EV models such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi.
This will change as electric cars, ranging from mass-market to luxury markets, will be introduced in India by 2023. Let’s look at the electric vehicles that automakers anticipate releasing by 2023.
Tata Motors – 3 EV Launches
With the Tigor EV AND the Tata Nexon EV, Tata Motors presently dominates the EV sales in the passenger market. Because of its EVs aimed at the mass market, the automaker has emerged as India’s most successful EV manufacturer. Three EVs are slated to be released by Tata Motors: the Sierra, Tiago EV, and Altroz.
The Altroz EV debut may be anticipated this year, while the Tiago AND Sierra will be introduced in the first quarter of 2023. All three vehicles will be built using the automaker’s Ziptron technology.
Mercedes-Benz – 3 EV Launches
Mercedes-Benz, a German luxury automaker, already sells the EQC in India. In the upcoming months, the company plans to debut the EQA and the EQS, two vehicles with ex-showroom prices of around Rs 1.75 crore. The EQS SUV will be released as the third product in 2023.
The automaker will produce and assemble all three cars in India. When released, the EQS and EQA will face off against the future BMW i7 and BMW iX1, respectively.
BMW – 2 EV Launches
With plans to introduce the i7 and iX1 EVs in India, BMW will be closing in on Mercedes. As a CBU, the BMW i7 is anticipated to cost approximately Rs 2.5 crore (ex-showroom).
In contrast, the iX1 is anticipated to cost around Rs 60 lakh (ex-showroom) and will compete with the Volvo XC40 and the Mercedes EQA Recharge. Early in 2023, BMW will be launching both cars in India. Right now, BMW offers the i4 electric car in India for Rs 69.90 lakh, which is comparable to the cost of the Kia EV6.
Audi – 1 EV Launch
The Q4 e-Tron, one of Audi’s planned EV launches, is also included on the list. The e-Tron will be supplied as a CBU and on sale in the first half of 2023 at about Rs 80 lakh.
When released, the Audi Q4 e-Tron will face competition from Ioniq 5, the Volvo XC40 Recharge, the EV6, and future vehicles from Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Audi may be at risk due to the CBU approach, but we don’t want to make that determination just yet.
Tesla – 4 EV Launches
Tesla has ambitious plans to enter India with its four models, the Model 3, Model Y, Model X, and Model S; however, there have been several obstacles along the road, such as tariffs and uncertainty about whether something is made in India or the U.S. The automaker has also delayed plans and urged its Indian team to focus on the Middle East. They have also relocated there.
